"Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body,
it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity." -John F. Kennedy
| Add Variety to Your Work Out Routine |
Changing Your Workout Routine Is GoodWhile it is true people are creatures of habit, when it comes to your exercise routine variety will be the key that will keep you motivated. At some point, getting onto the treadmill and watching ESPN, Discovery, or CNN will begin to get old. As that happens, you will lose the motivation you once had to exercise. Life will get busier, new activities will crop up, and very quickly you can lose the level of fitness you had achieved by your regular work outs.
How do you keep the excitement level up? Vary your workouts. You don't have to be a competition body builder to hit the weights now and again. Many gyms have incorporated circuit training which is a series of exercises done in succession to build lean muscle mass and get the heart into the aerobic level and maintain it for the duration of the circuit.
A yoga class that meets once or twice a week can be a nice way to get some quality stretching exercise in and also some excellent meditation. Pilates are also a quality workout where someone else does the leading and allows you to just show up and participate in the session.
The point is to not let yourself get drawn into the same old mundane workout every other day. Although this may be the way you get started in building your workout routine, be deliberate in setting up different types of exercise to stimulate your system.
Cross training used to be a popular term but variety is really the key. Find several different things you like to do and then build your routine with these different types of exercises. The added benefit to your body is that you will be much less likely to have repetitive motion injury due to having a variety of exercises. Most importantly, find things you like to do that benefit your overall fitness and go for it. |
