Take Your Workout to the Pool

Don’t Be Afraid to Get All Wet When You Work Out

Every four years after the Olympics, swim teams and YMCAs across America get a rush of new members seeking to sign up and find out if their youngster is the next Mark Spitz or Michael Phelps.  While this publicity is not harmful in any way, have you ever thought about using the water as part of your workout program?

Many people swim regularly for their exercise programs but usually they have history in the pool such as swim team or life guarding.  If you don't have a lot of experience with water you still can get a great workout in the pool without having to enroll in remedial swimming classes with the 8-year olds.

Most health clubs or gyms with pools offer courses such as water aerobics, water therapy, and water obstacle courses that are designed in the shallow end of the pool and give you a great aerobic workout.  Many high level athletes are now looking to working out in the pool as an alternative that doesn't do harm to their joints and ligaments that running does--even on treadmills, can cause over time.

Although swimmers shave off most of their body hair and don Speedos this is not a requirement for the average person looking for a workout in the water.  You will be surprised to find many people that look and feel a little nervous and out of place just like you do but once you get into the water and start your water cardio class you will feel just fine.

The number one fear of most people regarding going to the pool is the bathing suit--so find a comfortable suit and realize it will be a little weird but well worth it.

Water exercise is great cardio and very healthy for your joints, muscles, and ligaments.  Plus it's a great way to get a workout.
